grade 3,4 & 5 MATH

MATH PUZZLE

Teachers have lots of creative ways to increase fluency in these two basic computations (addition and subtraction). Learning the number system and how to implement it is one of the most difficult tasks a young child encounters. To make them aware about the basic operations used in math, the students of grade 3 were provided with a “Math Puzzle” worksheet. As per the instructions provided the students tried to solve the puzzle. Children found this activity very interesting and this puzzle enabled them to think creatively about numbers.

MATH AND SPORTS

Mathematics Awareness was created to help focus the student’s attention on the nature of mathematics and the way it affects our daily lives.
The first areas where people think about mathematics being applied are in the sciences and engineering. Yet mathematics plays a large role in the efficiency of sports
. To make them aware about the basic concepts used in math the students of grade 3 were made to do long jump and students were asked to measure the distance covered by them. Students actively participated in this learning process which in turn helped them to connect the classroom activity with sports.

MATH ORIGAMI

A mathematical concept was taught through the art of origami or paper folding during the Math Awareness Week. Students of Grade 3 folded the net provided to them. As they followed the instructions given by the teacher the net was transformed into a solid shape “cube”. They were astonished of their own creativity and thought of ideas to utilize the cube as dice, gift box etc.

MATH IN DAILY LIFE

Students of grade 3, 4 and 5 got to learn how math is used in our daily life via various interesting activities. Grade 3 enjoyed their number story wherein each student were given different placards and asked to narrate their own story based on the same. It was a fun experience for the students and each student got a chance to actively participate in it.

Grade 4 students solved a worksheet based on picnic. Students had to plan out what all necessary items they would carry when they have to go on a picnic and also find out the cost of each item and the total money spent on them. Children thoroughly enjoyed the planning part of the worksheet as they had put their thinking caps on.

Grade 5 students learnt on what basis they would buy a car. They found this activity very interesting and got to learn a lot of things like cost of the petrol, average of a car etc. They got to understand the factors on which they would buy a car.

MATH AND DANCE

Students of Grade 4 and 5 learnt the math concepts through dance. Few students of Grade 4 and 5 performed classical dance and the other students were asked to observe them carefully. Students learnt various concepts such as division, ascending and descending order, and angles which were used while performing the dance steps. All the students enjoyed the activity and realized that Math is used in all walks of life.

MATH AND HISTORY

The students of Grade3 were shown the video on History of Mathematics. Grade 4 and 5 were shown video on the Life of Pythagoras. They were asked to observe the video carefully and solve the worksheet based on the videos. Their mathematical skills based on the video were tested. The students enjoyed the video and gained knowledge about the history of math and the Life Pythagora
