TONGUE AND TASTE BUD:.Grade IV

To make the learning of Science an enjoyable session students of Grade IV were made to experience the functioning of the digestive system through various activities.

Teacher had cut the lemon into slice and gave each student to smell it for 2-3 minutes. Gradually they could feel the saliva flowing in their mouth .Then teacher squeezed the same lemon into their mouth and they could feel that the amount of saliva in the mouth had increased. Teacher explained that smell or sight causes flow of the saliva in the mouth and flow is greater when food is present in the mouth.

They were asked to gargle their mouth and then teacher made them wait for few minutes for the taste of the mouth to get normal. Then she placed a piece of boiled potato in their mouth and asked them to chew it slowly. Students knew that potato contains starch in it. They experienced that when the food is chewed thoroughly it gets mixed with the saliva and the process of digestion starts.
