Grade 3 Science: Lesson 1- The World of Living Things

Observation of Specimens

The first lesson in science for grade 3, deals with the different characteristics of living things. The various differences between living and non-living things were discussed in the classes.

For a better understanding of the topic, students were shown different specimens:

Mushroom: A non green plant, cannot prepare its own food

Live Earthworm: Breathes through skin

Green Plant (Mint): Uses stomata (pores on leaf ) for breathing, can prepare its own food

Sprouts: Growth of a plant from seeds

Dead leaf: All living things die

Stomata (Slide under microscope): Used by leaves for breathing

All the above specimens were shown to students individually. They welcomed this activity with immense curiosity and participated happily.
