Experiments with Ice
The following experiments were performed in the class:
1. Two ice cubes were placed, one in Saw Dust and the other in Salt. After a few minutes, it was observed that the ice cube coated with salt melted soon, while the one coated with saw dust lasted for more time.
Conclusion: Saw Dust is a bad conductor of heat and hence it does not allow the surrounding heat to reach the ice cube. Thus the ice cube takes a longer time to melt.
2. An ice cube was placed in a dish. Air was blown on it using a straw. After a few minutes it was seen that a depression developed on the cube.
Conclusion: Due to the constant warm breath, the ice cube becomes hollow and melts faster.
