Grade 4 - Comprehension 6

Tim's Lesson

The lights had been turned off. For the fifth night running, Tim hid under the covers and hit the keys of his computers. He was engrossed in an exciting game and he could not stop playing even though it was way past bedtime.

He had been careful to keep his nightly habit a secret from his family. The last time his twin brother Eddie played computer games into the night, Dad and Mum took away his laptop and only gave it back to him after a few months. That was long enough for Eddie!

Not Tim – he made sure Dad and Mum had gone to bed before turning on his laptop. So far he had been lucky. Tonight he would continue for a little longer. This new game was especially exciting.

So, it was very late when Tim finally decided to get some shut-eye. Next morning a very sleepy Tim reluctantly dragged himself to school. As he sat in the classroom hoping the day would end soon, the teacher strode in. Mr Lee was a new teacher. He had replaced the very strict Ms James when she left to continue her studies abroad. Unlike Ms James he would not send students to the principal at the slightest sign of misbehavior. He also did not believe in detention classes.

Today's lesson was about the past tense. As Mr Lee was teaching about how past tense verbs could be formed, Tim's lids grew heavier and heavier. He bent over his book and closed his eyes, pretending to read. He tried to keep awake. But, the more he tried, the more sleep was conquering him…

Suddenly Mr Lee's voice sounded loud and clear. "How is dear Tim today? He is not himself today. I think he badly wants to answer a question…Tim, you can read this sentence?"

Tim woke with a start. He pulled himself together and looked at the board. The words on the board looked faint. He barely could make out the lines of the letters. He strained his eyes, but all he could see was a blurred mess of letters. He tried again and thought that he could decipher a few letters.

He began to read the sentence. "The toad was ugly."

Laughter rang out through the class.

Tim's brother was also in the class. No, Tim! It should read 'The road was muddy'. Are you alright?"

The students could not stop laughing. Poor Tim turned very red in the face. If only he could run off somewhere and hide! He wasn't quite sure what Mr Lee would say and do next. And Dad and Mum would be furious. It was all his own fault. Staying up late and caused his drowsiness. Too many computer games, like Mum kept warning him about, had harmed his eyesight. Today, Tim finally learns his lesson.
