  1. Re-read the last line. Explain using your own words, what the writer means be:

' I wonder if they are going to compel them to sing German too!'

  • While attending his last class in French, he heard some pigeons cooing outside the classroom. He ironically wondered if the birds would also be forced to sing German and lose their freedom like the French people.

  1. Give reasons from the passage as to why Monsieur Hamel say that they should be guilty for not learning French.

  • Parents send their children to work

  • To earn a small amount of money instead of educating them

  • He himself asked them to water his plants

  • He send them back because he wanted to go for fishing instead of teaching them


  1. Directed writing:

Imagine you are one of the villagers sitting at the end of the classroom. Write a letter to your relative living in another country and narrating the entire incident that took place in the class. Focus on the following points.

  • Monsieur Hamel's french class

  • The importance of a national language and being united

  • Monsieur Hamel asked Frantz to answer but he was not able to answer

  • Mr. Hamel said that he won't scold Frantz because somewhere or the other it was everyone's fault for not focusing on French language.

  • He also said that French is the most beautiful language and that people will be united only if they know their language well

  • There were new cards like little flags waving all about the class.

  • The class was very silent and everyone was busy writing.

  1. On the roof, the pigeons cooed in low tones. Answer: Cooed – simple past
