Comprehension passage for grade 3

ASKING PERMISSION

COMPREHENSION PASSAGE FOR GRADE 3

Drona loved brinjal sambar. Near the village there was a field where lots of brinjals grew. It belonged to Bhairav. Drona went to the field. He did not take a brinjal and run. Instead, he bent down beside the brinjal plants so that his mouth was close to the ground. 'Field, field,' he whispered, 'may I take a brinjal?' 'Why just one, dear Drona?' he replied, pretending to be the field. 'Take as many as you like.'

Drona took a dozen brinjals and went home. A few days later he wanted to eat some more brinjal sambar. Drona went to the field the second time. And then again and again.

Bhairav, the owner of the field, knew that somebody was stealing his brinjals. He was a giant of a man. He was also the most hard-working man in the village. Bhairav decided to keep a watch on his field. One night he saw Drona sneak in and followed him. Drona went straight to the brinjals. As usual, he bent down and asked the field for permission to take the brinjals. Then he gave himself permission, as usual. But before he could move to pluck the brinjals, Bhairav pounced on him. He threw Drona across his shoulder and carried him to the edge of a pond. There he dumped him on the ground.

'Pond, pond,' said Bhairav, 'how many times should I dip this wretch into your water?' And answering for the pond, he replied, 'Not once, dear Bhairav. Dip him a hundred times, or even more.'

Drona got home very late that night. He was soaking wet- but he never stole any brinjals again. Why, he never stole anything ever again!
