Types of reactions:
Students of grade 7 were taken to the laboratory to perform experiments on the topic types of reactions.
Students were divided into groups of two, each performing a different experiment.
Two types of reactions were demonstrated followed by practicals.
1) Simple displacement reaction is a type of reaction in which one element displaces another element from a compound and takes its place.
A representation of the reaction is as follows:
A + BC → AC + B
Iron filings were put in a test tube containing blue colored copper sulphate. The iron displaces copper out from copper sulphate to form a green colored iron (II) sulphate. The displaced copper gets deposited on the iron filings.
Fe + CuSO4→ FeSO4 + Cu
(blue) (green)
2) Double Decomposition reaction is a type of reaction in which two substances react by exchanging their radicals.
A representation of the reaction is as follows:
AB + CD → AD +C B
Silver nitrate solution was added to a test tube containing sodium chloride solution. Silver nitrate and sodium chloride mutually exchange their radicals forming silver chloride and sodium nitrate.
AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3
